Influence of Media on Mass Murderers

The way the events are perceived and thus the collective memory are substantially influenced by the language used by the media, which has become the most important source of news today.

A study, which analyzes the media’s influence over mass murderers, has striking results.

The researchers report that a vast majority of the mass murderers are male and that many of them perceive themselves as victims.

Furthermore, it was also revealed that many mass murderers are mentally ill, suicidal and have grandiose behaviors. These people mainly target crowded places (schools, parks) with lethal weapons in order to draw attention in the media. Therefore, the motivation of the murderers is consolidated by the fact that the media presents more news on mass killings and homicides compared to other news.

Studies draw attention to how important it is to have collaborative works between media organizations and experts and scientists.
